Televisions shows are encouraging hashtag usage to have conversations with viewers, they are taking “selfies” at award shows and businesses are fully integrating social media into their marketing strategies. It doesn’t matter how much you detest social media, it is here to stay.
You can either run away and hide in a cave or you can welcome it with open arms.
As social media further infiltrates our lives it is important to stay ahead of the ball when it comes to our social branding.
I recently read “10 Interesting Investments to Make in Your 20s”, on Entrepreneur.com.
I was pleasantly surprised to see number 4, Social Media Strategy. “Developing a simple social media strategy by identifying your brand, your offering and who you need to connect with will make good use of this time. An online presence takes years to build up, so it’s best to start now.” (Entrepreneur.com)
Just six months ago, the Salem State University Public Relations Society invited me to speak to their members on the importance of social branding. These students are about to enter the “real world” and need to know that their social media presence is part of their personal brand. I told them as they wait in lingo between college classes and entering the workforce, they should start developing their brand and cleaning up their social media presence.
However, even if you aren’t in college or in your 20’s, it is never too late to start working on your branding. Businesses include social media in their “background checks” whether it is ethical or not. And let’s face it, you never know when you might be in a place to find a new job.
Lucky for you, my presentation to the students applies to anyone! Click through the slides and see how you can spruce up your social brand.
