News Feed FYI: Taking into Account Live Video When Ranking Feed

Facebook is changing their news feed algorithm again.  View Facebook Live video as its own content type.

“Facebook Live videos are more likely to appear higher in News Feed when those videos are actually live, compared to after they are no longer live.

People spend more than 3x more time watching a Facebook Live video on average compared to a video that’s no longer live. This is because Facebook Live videos are more interesting in the moment than after the fact.”

Three Million Business Stories. What’s Yours?

New Facebook Tool

“Three million businesses actively advertise on Facebook. That’s three million companies from all over the world, with more than 70% from outside of the US.

Each of these businesses has a unique story and mission.

To celebrate the businesses that use Facebook to grow, we created Your Business Story—a tool that makes it easy to create a video that shows what your business brings to the world. Because we believe the best way to tell the story of three million businesses is to empower each one to share their own.”

Mari Smith: New Feature on Facebook Mobile App

“Facebook Page Admins that use the Pages Manager App: do you see a setting to “Share Link to Message Page”?! Aha!! I do believe this is new and it is connected to the Messenger URL short link that I mentioned recently. The URL syntax is (replace my username with yours). The short link is designed to instantly open a chat thread with a business. However, the link stopped working after a couple days. Likely, the kinks are being worked out. Hmm!!”

Facebook and Instagram Advertising Go Together Like…

“Facebook and Instagram are two of the most popular mobile platforms. In fact, one in five minutes on mobile is spent on Instagram or Facebook. That’s more than the next 10 mobile platforms combined.

Facebook and Instagram campaigns can use the same photos or video across both platforms or unique creative for each. When you’re ready to use Facebook and Instagram ads together, either add Instagram to an existing campaign by editing the ad set’s Placement settings or set up a new campaign across both platforms.”

Celebrating female voices on YouTube

“Today, ahead of International Women’s Day, we’re announcing two new programs to continue championing female voices on YouTube. The first is a new, year-long partnership with the United Nations that appoints top YouTube female creators as the very first Change Ambassadors for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Action campaign. The second is a global production program across the YouTube Spaces that puts women both in front of and behind the camera.

Why We’re Standing with Apple
“But there’s a big difference between giving the government information we have and being forced to redesign our products to allow access that no one currently has. If one judge can force Apple to create a backdoor into its phone, another judge could make us breach our data protections too.”

Additional Comment

Facebook is letting publishers use Instant Articles to collect email newsletter signups

“The new feature seems to be addressed at increasingly familiar publisher concerns: They are coming around to the idea of having platforms host their editorial content, recognizing that they have to distribute their brands where readers are. But with the platform setting the rules, publishers worry about sacrificing a direct relationship with the readers. Email, for all the claims of it being dead, is critical for many publishers as a distribution (and marketing) channel they continue to control.”
